Love-Lies-Bleeding (Amaranthus caudatus) gets its many common names—like tassel flower, velvet flower, and foxtail amaranth—from its long, trailing strings of deep ruby-red flowers. The tiny blooms hang like waterfalls and can be used fresh or dried.
🌸 Flowering: July to October
📏 Height: to 100cm
🌿Annual, Half Hardy
SOW & GROW
In spring, sow seeds in pots or modules. Lightly cover with perlite or vermiculite and keep at about 15°C. Germination usually takes around 2 weeks, and seedlings may need potting on.
Hold off on hardening off and planting out until all frost risk has passed. Space plants about 50cm apart—they can get quite big. They thrive in a sunny spot with well-drained soil.
ENJOY
Cut the flower strings for fresh arrangements or dry them to use indoors through the winter. Their rich colour and texture add interest both ways
