Each Tuscan Pesciatina is a whole lot of satisfying lettuce! The hearted crispheads can be green with red edging, ours grew mostly deep red with only a little green showing until sliced. Wonderful crunchy leaves that are generously sprinkled with bubbles, these help salad dressing to stay on!
SOW: a little seed every 2-3 weeks in from March to September to give you a succession of lettuces (seed depth 15mm) In hot weather you can help your lettuces germinate by putting the seed packet in the fridge overnight before sowing the next day. Sowing in trays or modules will help you to protect emerging plants from slugs and snails
GROW: plant out when large enough to do so at about 25-30 apart. September sown plants may need cloches
EAT: the deep red & bright green make for a tasty colour combination (& Pesciatina is tasty) perhaps combine with some different textures such as chives, baby leaf spinach & spring onions in your salad bowl.
Bubbles on the leaves
The bubbly surface of the leaves is a feature of Pesciatina, you may see this phenomenon described as heavily blistered but, I am sure you will agree, bubbles is a much nicer way of describing this growth habit.
