If you've never sown onions in August before, this is a lovely place to start. We've brought together three reliable varieties that are perfect for sowing now and carrying you through to an early harvest next summer.
If you'd like a little more guidance, you can find our Set for Success article all about sowing overwintering onions, packed with tips to help you get the very best from them.
Sowing onions now gives them plenty of time to put down strong roots before winter arrives. Then, as soon as the weather starts to warm in spring, they're ready to race away, rewarding you with delicious homegrown onions from around May onwards. It's a simple way to keep your garden working hard all year round and enjoy fresh harvests even earlier next season.
Ailsa Craig: top notch heirloom variety with outstanding flavour.  For autumnsowing, space seed 3-5cm apart.  Sow in early August in Scotland and Northern England, mid-August across most of England, and late August in the South West & South Wales.
Musona White Italian: a versatile white skinned variety that’s just as happy picked young as a salad onion as it is grown on to full maturity. Suitable for both autumn and spring sowing.
Senshyu Yellow Globe: hardy and reliable Japanese overwintering type with a lovely mild flavour, producing classic straw coloured onions in early/mid-summer. Sow directly where they are to grow or start them in seed trays to plant out in October.
There's something very satisfying about knowing next summer's onions are already tucked up in the ground!
