Rouge De Hiver is a beautiful heirloom romaine with more than 140 years of history. Its French name means Red of Winter, and it really does thrive in cooler weather, when the leaves deepen to rich bronze-red tones. Sow in spring or autumn, or right through if you’re in a cooler or more northerly spot. The leaves are crisp, full of flavour, and wonderfully versatile. You can harvest whole heads, pick single leaves, or treat it as a cut-and-come-again for a steady supply of colour and crunch.
This variety is part of our naturally nurtured range, the seed comes from an organic source
SOW: a very good choice to sow in early spring and again in late autumn.  Seed depth 10-15mm. Sowing a little seed at a time in modules and transplanting will give you lettuces over a longer time. Winter sowing is best in a coldframe or greenhouse.
GROW:  plant out when large enough to do so, 25-30cm apart.  In the winter plant out under an open-ended cloche as our winters tend to be wet and windy and can batter young lettuces.  Watch out for slugs and snails in the spring – they love lettuces!
ENJOY: the flavour of heirloom varieties can rarely be surpassed.  We often use Rouge de Hiver for side salads with pasta dishes & with grilled chicken & bacon in the winter.
