Lovely Matilda is a bold green butterhead with tender leaves that quickly grow into ruffled heads just begging to be picked and enjoyed. It’s a top choice for flavour and comes with the bonus of excellent disease resistance. This variety stands up well to aphids and downy mildew, which can be a problem in cool, damp conditions or where lettuces are grown close together. A great one to include as part of your salad garden.
This variety is part of our naturally nurtured range, the seed comes from an organic source.
SOW: a little seed every 2-3 weeks from February to July. Seed depth 5-10mm. You can start them in modules and transplant so that there is no need to thin. Early sowings need protection.
GROW: plant out when large enough to do so. Watch out for slugs and snails – they love lettuces! Matilda is resistant to aphids and downy mildew. Space 15-30cm apart. You can plant lettuces in between slower growing crops; they help you make the best use of the space.
ENJOY: the lovely bold green leaves are perfect for salads – stick to a green theme or add contrast with peppers and sliced red onion.
