A terrific garden variety: Oarsman is vigorous, bulking up quickly, and has pure white, long shanks with no sign of bulbing. Another excellent quality is that is stands in good condition over a long period until you need it in your kitchen.
SOW: in March and April for harvest October through to December. We start our leeks in modules rather than a seed bed as it makes them easy to transplant.
GROW: transplant when they are large enough (about 20cm tall), plant out one leek per 15cm deep hole made with a dibber or stick. Water the leek into the hole and let the soil wash in but try not to get soil in between the leaves. It sounds fiddly but leeks are worth the trouble. If it is dry after planting water gently every day but otherwise just leave them to grow!
ENJOY: leeks can be lifted when you need them so you can enjoy them fresh.
Tip: loosen the soil with a fork before lifting your leeks
