Jolant is a vigorous grower and very early cropping – you can harvest from August and if you use it as a mini veg you can pick it even earlier! It has a lovely mild flavour and a well-deserved winner of an AGM.
SOW: February (indoors) onwards to March, you can also sow this variety in April to extend harvesting. We sow our leeks 5-10mm deep in modules rather than a seed bed.
GROW: after 10-15 weeks, when they are large enough (about 20cm tall), plant out one leek per 15cm deep hole made with a dibber or stick. Water the leek into the hole and let the soil wash in but try not to get soil in between the leaves. It sounds fiddly but leeks are worth the trouble. If it is dry after planting water gently every day but otherwise just leave them to grow!
ENJOY: harvesting from August to November, or earlier if pulled as a mini leek: for these sow & grow in situ (or a container) and pull when pencil thick…roast or braise or use for a very mild onion flavour in a salad
