Robust Blue Green Winter Husky is a relatively new kid on the block that is fast developing a reputation for hardiness, flavour and yield. This variety will stand in the ground through some seriously cold winter weather, making it a good choice for more exposed gardens. The flavour is oniony, becoming sweeter when cooked, and those shanks stay smooth with very little sign of bulbing, giving you more leek to eat!
This variety is part of our naturally nurtured range, the seed comes from an organic source

Sow: best sown in April or May although you can start a little earlier. We sow our leeks 10mm deep in modules or seed trays which makes it easier to separate them when transplanting. It can take around 12 weeks for them to reach about 1cm thick and about 20cm tall, when they’re ready to harden off and transplant.

Grow: plant out 1 leek per 15cm deep hole made with a dibber or stick. Aim for 20-25cm spacing. Water the leek into the hole and let the soil wash around the roots, trying not to get soil between the leaves. It sounds fiddly but leeks are worth the effort!  Water gently every day if its dry while they settle in, otherwise just leave them to grow.

Enjoy: even if it snows you’ll find Husky happy on your plot, hopefully with the blue-green leaves sticking up so you can find them easily! You will have lovely fresh leeks through the depths of winter, harvesting from Christmas to right through to April.
