Red Russian Curled is a superb tasting, frilly leafed kale with an attractive red colouring and a blue/green tint to the leaves. It is very versatile as it can be used early as baby leaves or left to mature for winter use when it colour will intensify with the colder weather.
SOW & GROW: in March to & May, starting in modules, pots or a seed bed. You can also sow in summer to give salad leaves in early autumn. Transplant when large enough at 50-75cm apart (closer for salad use), water well to establish.
ENJOY: use small leaves for salads, then cut leaves when 10-15cm long (cut from several plants for an adequate picking). Regular harvesting encourages young growth over a longer period. In late winter early spring harvest the side shoots at 10-12cm. Stop when flowers buds form. Kale can be enjoyed in soup, stew and stir fry. Best eaten fresh but it can be stored in a poly bag in the fridge for up to 3 days or frozen.
