Stunning is the best word to describe Midnight Sun: from the ruffled and crinkled leaf edges via the smooth leaf centres that blend from green to a deeper blush tint to the remarkable pink ribs and veins this variety is magnificent. Pick at any stage for a delicious feast that can also see you through the winter.
SOW: from March to June, in modules/pots or a seed bed (max 1cm deep). Transplant when large enough, after about 5 weeks.
GROW: space plants at 40-50cm apart. If you plan to cut early as a baby or small leaf you can plant much closer and gradually leave a couple of plants with more space for winter leaves. Kale prefers a rich soil and needs watering in dry weather.
EAT & ENJOY: harvest when the leaves reach the size you are after, cutting young leaves from several plants (not taking too much from one plant). For large plants leave until October and then you ought to be able to take leaves right through to April
