There is no escaping the price but Emerald Ice is so worth it as this variety is rapidly gaining attention as the best kale of all and that is not an exaggeration. The textured, ruffled, green leaves develop a very striking white centre as they mature and maintain their very sweet flavour coupled with crisp texture. And you can take repeated cuts from Emerald Ice from summer right through to late winter
SOW: March to July 10-15mm deep in modules. When large enough move to individual pots Gradually harden off before planting out when about 15cm tall. Can be direct sown in for use as baby salad leaves
GROW: for sweet kale from late summer to late winter space plants at 45cm apart. Let them settle in and put growth on before you start cutting. Regular harvesting encourages more growth to sprout over a longer period. Cut plants in turn. The distinct colouration forms as the plants mature
ENJOY: sweet and crisp, and available into the winter when fresh greens are in short supply.
