Hollyhock Black Single has stunning, silky flowers in the deepest purple — so dark they look black in the sun — with a bright yellow throat. For extra impact, grow them in front of a pale wall to really show off the colour. A great choice for wildlife-friendly gardens, as bees and butterflies love the open, single flowers. These bloom the year after sowing.
🌸 Flowering: June to August (from second year)
📏 Height: 150-180cm
🌿Perennial
SOW: start sowing from April to early June, either thinly in a seed bed or in trays or pots of seed compost. Cover them lightly with compost or vermiculite and keep them somewhere warm and bright—around 18–20°C is ideal. Later sowings can go in a cold frame. Germination usually takes 10–14 days. Once seedlings are big enough to handle, pot up the stronger ones and grow them on.
GROW: plant out in September or October, spacing them 30-60cm apart in their final spot — the wider spacing helps improve airflow around your plants. They’ll settle in over winter and flower the following summer.
They like a sunny, sheltered spot, and might need a bit of staking once they shoot up.
ENJOY: the rich, dramatic colour might just spark a love for dark flowers. Plant near a light backdrop to really make them pop.
