Simple soil-building, the natural way with Alfalfa. This is a legume that quietly gets to work underground—fixing nitrogen, improving soil structure, and adding rich organic matter as it grows. It’s easy to establish and happy in poor soils, though it won’t thrive in anything too acidic.
Making the most of Alfalfa
Sow from early April to late July, and let it grow for at least 2 months. Leave it in place for up to a year if you like—alfalfa just keeps on giving, steadily bulking up and nourishing the soil. When you're ready, cut it down and dig it in before planting your next crop.
