Gaillardia Burgundy produces rich wine-red flowers, 5–7cm across, with bright yellow centres that fade to deep red towards the edges. Irresistible to butterflies, this variety is a great choice for a wildlife-friendly garden. You’ll find yourself torn between leaving them to brighten the garden or cutting them to enjoy indoors.
🌸 Flowering: June to October
📏 Height: to 75cm
🌿Perennial (short lived)
SOW: sow seeds during March to April in a tray with seed compost. Cover them lightly with perlite or vermiculite, then pop the tray in a cold frame. They usually take 2–3 weeks to germinate. When the seedlings have their first true leaves, pot them on into small pots and start hardening them off gradually.
GROW: space your plants about 20cm apart. They might need a bit of staking as they grow. They love a sunny spot with well-drained soil—right in the middle of a border is a good home for them.
ENJOY: remove dead heads to encourage more deeply coloured blooms. With strong stems, these flowers are perfect for fresh-cut bouquets.
