AGM winner Stanley is a white-flowered, white-seeded variety that’s quick off the mark — perfect for getting an early crop of tasty beans. It’s also a great option for a late sowing in July (or even August in milder spots) to enjoy fresh beans into September and October. A reliable, heavy cropper with great flavour, and since the pods are held high on the plant, they’re easy to pick too.
To be an AGM winner means that this variety has been outstanding in trials: reliable and with great garden performance
SOW: start these off in pots or modules placed in an unheated greenhouse or even on a window during April or May. You can sow directly into the soil but wait until mid-May as they really do not like cold soil. You can also sow in July (or August in mild areas) and for a crop in early to mid-autumn time.
GROW: plant out after hardening off when about 15cm tall after all frost danger has passed. Being a dwarf variety Stanley should not need any support except if your garden catches the wind. French Beans are self-pollinating. They cope well with drier summers
ENJOY: pick when young and cook whole or sliced, they are delicious, or leave the pods at the end of the season for drying. Use the creamy white beans in casseroles. All French beans freeze well.
