Bianca di Trieste is an Italian heirloom that combines flavour with prolific cropping all summer long. The smooth, short cylindrical fruits range from creamy white to a pale green. Pick them at about plumb thumb thickness and they are delicious in salads, although they’ve been tasty in every recipe we’ve tried.

Sow: between late April and on into June, indoors. Sow one seed per small pot, 25mm deep, and keep keep moist but not waterlogged.

Grow: harden off and plant out after all danger of frost has passed.  In cooler areas you can protect young plants with cloches until they have settled in.  Bianca di Trieste is known as a prolific fruiting variety, so keep picking those young courgettes to encourage plenty more.

Enjoy: find your favourite way to cook them. Fry, steam, bake, griddle... there aren’t many things you can’t do with a courgette. We also use them as a staple in autumn stews, particularly when the plants are still producing and we're wondering quite what to do with the next one.

💡 Did you know?

This variety originates in northern Italy, in the area around Trieste and Gorizia near the Slovenian border, hence its alternative name ‘Bianca Goriziana’
