Verte De Cambrai is a French heirloom made for the colder months, with a mild, nutty flavour and a neat, compact habit. It grows slowly but steadily—start picking individual leaves a few weeks after sowing, once the fourth pair has formed. A tidy, reliable option that slots easily into any winter cropping plan.

SOW: in late winter/early spring and autumn sow under cover, at all other times sow outside. It can bolt in hot weather. It can be started in modules but it is very successful sown in situ - in a moistened seed drill or covered with moist sacking or fleece until germinated (can be slow in hot weather)

GROW: generally a trouble free crop. Protect crops in winter with cloches or grow in an unheated greenhouse but do keep them well ventilated. Harvest after about 12 weeks. You can cut the whole head and leave the plant to resprout (usually only once) or pick individual leaves as you need them – they do wilt quite quickly so pick as you need them.

EAT & ENJOY: mild flavour, super in mixed salads at any time of the year and a good compliment to winter salad flavours. The flowers are also edible.
