Havanna Gold produces rich orange fruits with a mild heat (500–2,000 SHU) and an outstanding, complex flavour. The fruits are thin-fleshed and prolific, and while they’re excellent fresh, they also dry beautifully. A good choice if you want to make your own golden chilli powder – it adds a lovely aroma when stirred into hot food.
SOW: from indoors from mid-April to the end of May into warm compost, barely covering the seeds – they need light to germinate.
GROW: once seedlings have 2–3 leaves, plant into the greenhouse or harden off for a warm, sheltered spot outside. Grow in soil, containers or grow bags. Plants are open-growing, early to fruit, and keep producing right up to the first frosts.
ENJOY: use fresh, dry for powder, or freeze to keep a stash for later. Mild in heat, but big on flavour.
