Tall Utah has, with the march of time, earned its place as an heirloom. Bred over 75 years ago for disease resistance, it remains a reliable favourite today. You’ll be growing thick, crisp, stringless, pale-green stems that don’t need earthing up. It’s a late-maturing variety, ideal for autumn use, with a strong flavour and that lovely balance of tenderness and crunch.
SOW: early spring in a propagator or mid spring under cover. Celery needs light to germinate – sow seeds on the surface then prick out into small pots when large enough to handle.
GROW: harden off and plant at 5/6 leaf stage after all danger of frost has passed. This type of celery is shallow rooted and will appreciate regular watering and an occasional organic feed. Tall Utah is a green stemmed variety that can be block or row planted. Once it’s big enough, dig up and chop off the roots, leaving the basal area to keep in a bunch. It can be stored in a shallow jug of water to prolong crunch if you can’t use it all immediately.
ENJOY: this stringless celery is easy to prepare, lovely raw or cooked. Easy to freeze to add flavour to winter stews, soups and casseroles.
