Heirloom Golden Self Blanching has great flavour, a super crispiness for salads, and it is easy to grow. Planting these in a block allows them to shade each other, keeping the stem colour muted to a pale yellowy-green. Easy to manage without any need to trench. Chop and freeze some of your celery harvest for adding flavour to your winter meals.
SOW: March/April in a propagator or mid-April under cover. Surface sow onto damp compost and very lightly cover.
GROW: prick out into small pots when large enough to handle. Plant at 5/6 leaf stage after hardening off and all danger of frost has passed. Planting in a block at 15-20cm spacing allows them to self-blanch as the plants shade each other. This celery is shallow rooted and will appreciate regular watering and a feed. Ready to start cutting about 16 weeks after sowing. Start lifting from the edge of the block.
ENJOY: lovely taste and crunch in salads. Celery enriches the flavour or soups and stews. Freeze chopped celery - a lovely addition to winter casseroles.
