Tabiro is proof that new varieties can still come from traditional open-pollinated breeding. The creamy, heavy heads have a gentle, aromatic flavour and are at their best when harvested in mid to late autumn. The plants have a robust, upright habit that gives well-wrapped heads which are almost self-blanching. It’s proving to be disease resistant and a really good option for growers who care.
This variety is part of our naturally nurtured range, the seed comes from an organic source
SOW: May & June 15–20mm deep in pots. A slightly earlier start from mid-April for a September crop is also possible.
GROW: transplant about 6 weeks after sowing into firm fertile ground, spacing about 60cm apart. Keep regularly watered for steady uninterrupted growth. Allow about 15 weeks from transplanting to cutting the curds: put the date in your diary! Don’t leave any caulis too long, at their best when they are nice and tight.
ENJOY: aromatic flavour with a sweetish tone that is lovely raw or cooked. One sowing means they will all mature quite close together: it’s ok, they freeze well – just separate into even sized florets, blanch for 3 minutes, plunge into cold water, drain and pack into portions.
