Eskimo F1 is a brilliant choice if you want to enjoy fresh-dug carrots at Christmas. An AGM winner, it’s one of the hardiest varieties, tolerating cold down to -10°C without straw—ideal for harvests from November to early February, as long as your soil doesn’t freeze completely solid. Strong tops make pulling easy, and the roots have great colour and flavour—no wonder it’s a favourite.
SOW & GROW: sow 10mm deep from March to August. Early sowings can be lifted in September or October, but later sowings in June or July are best for winter harvests.
Keep rows weed-free—carrots hate competition. If extreme cold is forecast or your soil tends to freeze solid, you can mulch with straw, but for most gardens, it won’t be needed.
ENJOY: lovely colour and flavour, especially when freshly pulled. Store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks in a poly bag.
To freeze: slice or dice large carrots, blanch for 3 minutes, cool in cold water, drain, and pack into handy portions.
