Darina is well worth the wait—give it around 20 weeks from sowing and you’ll be rewarded with a good crop of well-flavoured, slightly oval roots (you’ll see what we mean when you slice them!). They also seem very resistant to splitting, which makes them much easier to clean when it’s time to prep.
SOW: at no more than 10mm deep from April to July (dig the soil thoroughly first). Sow sparingly to avoid the need for too much thinning. Sowing after late June can help your crop to avoid the worst of the carrot fly.
GROW: keep moist and weed free – they don’t like the competition. Be patient as Darina will need 20 weeks from sowing before you start to harvest: late August to December depending on when you sow.
EAT: enjoy the flavour when pulled fresh from the garden. Can be stored in a poly bag in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. To Freeze - slice or dice larger carrots, freeze baby carrots whole, blanch for 3 minutes, plunge in cold water, drain and pack into convenient sized potions.
