Wheelers Imperial forms beautiful dark green leafy heads with compact, flavourful hearts. It’s a versatile, time-honoured variety that offers two chances to grow—sow in spring for an autumn crop, or sow in late summer for a spring harvest. A great way to get more from your garden.
Sow:
- April/May for autumn harvest (Sept–Oct)
- July to September for spring harvest (March–April)
Sow 10mm deep in modules, then transplant when ready.
Grow: plant out about 5–6 weeks after sowing. If the weather turns rough after planting out, give some protection, but once established, plants are hardy. For smaller heads and more leafy greens, grow at closer spacing. Cut as needed—no need to harvest all at once.
Eat & Enjoy:
- Keeps in the fridge for up to a week in a poly bag
- Best steamed, but also good boiled
- To freeze: shred or cut, blanch for 1 minute, plunge into cold water, then drain and store
