April is a versatile and tasty cabbage—great raw in salads or cooked. Sow it for an autumn harvest, then again for spring. It’s a smart pick if you’re short on space, growing just 25–30cm apart with few outer leaves and a nice compact habit.
SOW: March to May for autumn use (Sept/Oct) and sow again in July and August for a spring harvest. Start seeds 10mm deep in modules and transplant when ready.
GROW: plant out about 5/6 weeks after sowing, protect if the weather turns cold after transplanting but once settled they are fine on their own. April can be close spaced at 25-30cm as the heads are compact. Cut the cabbages as you need them.
ENJOY: lovely eaten raw in salads or cooked. We prefer to steam our cabbage but you can cook it in boiling water. To Freeze – shred or cut, blanch for 1 minute, plunge into cold water and drain.
