Red Ball is a British-bred beauty and an AGM winner—if you’ve been waiting for red sprouts with proper flavour, this could be the one. The rich colour deepens as the weather turns cold, and best of all, it holds up when cooked. Tasty, eye-catching, and a bit different for the winter plate.
SOW: in April and May for crops November through to January. Start in modules or pots and plant out, after hardening off, when they are about 15cm tall
GROW: plant out into firm soil, space at 60-90cm – close spacing will create smaller sprouts. If your garden is windy you may need to stake your Brussels. Use the space between them to grow fast maturing or cut-and-come-again crops. In summer they will like a dose of general fertiliser.
ENJOY: pick the lowest buttons first and work your way up! At the end of the crop the sprout tops can be eaten as greens (delicious). Red Ball retain much of their colour when steamed, well flavoured too.
