Brilliant F1 is a superb early variety, ready from November and cropping right through to February. It produces plump, sweet, nutty sprouts with a milder flavour than many of the larger button types—less bitter, but still full of character. It’s a heavy cropper too, making it a great choice if you’re limited on space.
SOW: between February (for Nov crop) to mid-June (for Jan/Feb crop). Start in modules or pots, 5-10mm seed depth, when they are about 15cm tall harden off and plant out.
GROW: plant out into firm, compacted soil. Space at 45-60cm. If your garden is windy you may need to stake your Brussels (Brilliant is about 75cm tall). In summer Brussels like a dose of general fertiliser.
Want them all ready at once? Just take the top off the plant about three weeks before harvest. For Christmas sprouts, do this in the first week of December; for New Year’s, chop the top off in the second week.
