Ratio will reward you with a big crop of tasty white beans.  They are a multi-branched medium-short variety, about 70-80cm tall, that give you more beans than many other lower growing choices.  That height helps them to be resistant to being blown over… a good choice for windy plots and those growing in raised beds or containers.

This variety is part of our naturally nurtured range, the seed comes from an organic source.

SOW: from mid-February to April for harvest in June to August time.  Later sowings in May and June will also crop well.   We start all our beans in deeper modules – seed depth 5cm, and plant out once the soil is more workable in spring. You can sow them in situ if the soil is not waterlogged and protect with cloches while they get going.  Late sowings are fine in the open.

GROW: if pot sown grow on and plant out when about 15cm tall and space at 15-20cm apart.  Unless your plot is particularly exposed and windy then you ought to find Ratio stays upright:  stagger them in a triple row and their ‘branches’ will help keep each other up.

EAT: when in full flower the tops can be pinched out for use as greens.  June onwards when you can feel the beans are a decent size in the pods.  Fresh broad beans from the garden are a taste not to be missed.  To Freeze – shell, blanch for 3 minutes, plunge into cold water, drain and pack into portions.
