Thanks to British breeding, a new variety of basil, 'British', has been developed that's far more resilient to the UK climate. This robust type can handle wind, rain, and even light frosts, making it ideal for outdoor growing in Britain—something that was traditionally a challenge for this Mediterranean herb.

Despite its hardiness, it hasn’t lost the classic intense flavour that basil lovers expect. Even the flowers are packed with taste—add them to summer soups or pasta dishes for a fragrant, flavourful twist.

This variety comes highly recommended for gardeners looking to grow basil successfully without the need for a greenhouse or constant protection.

🌱 Seasonal Growing Guide

SOWING

•    For outdoor growing, sow seeds from February to June in pots or plug trays.
•    Use bottom heat to aid germination, or wait until mid-spring when temperatures naturally rise.
•    Sow seeds at a depth of 5mm, water gently in the morning to avoid damping off.
•    When seedlings are large enough to handle, pot them on and grow them on indoors until conditions are warm.
•    Transplant outdoors once the risk of frost has passed.
•    For indoor growing, you can sow year-round for a steady supply of fresh leaves.

GROWING

SPRING & EARLY SUMMER

  • Sow seeds and nurture seedlings.

SUMMER

  • Harvest leaves regularly.
  • Pinch out flower buds for more leafy growth or use the edible flowers in soups and pasta for a burst of flavour.

AUTUMN

  • Remove and compost spent plants; prepare the soil for next season.

ENJOY: add to summer soups, pasta dishes, and fresh salads—this aromatic variety delivers the classic, intense basil flavour. Even the flowers are full of flavour, offering a potent, fragrant flourish to your meals.
