Antirrhinum 'Lucky Lips' is one of those snapdragons that quickly becomes a favourite. Softly fragrant spikes of rich pink and white flowers bring plenty of old-fashioned charm to the garden, while their long flowering season keeps the colour going for months. They look equally at home in borders, containers and cutting gardens, and with regular deadheading will often reward you with a second flush of blooms. Garden pollinators love them too, so there's plenty to smile about.
🌸 Flowering: July to Sep
📏 Height: to 60cm
🌿Perennial best grown as an annual
Sow: in February and March or September to November. Surface sow onto moist seed compost in pots or trays and keep at around 20C until germination. You can seal trays inside a clear polythene bag to retain moisture. Germination usually takes 10-21 days. When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into pots or trays and grow on at about 15C. Pinch out when they have six pairs of leaves to encourage bushier growth. Autumn sowings can be overwintered under glass and planted out the following spring.
Grow: harden off before planting out after the last frosts, spacing around 25cm apart. Deadhead regularly to encourage a second flush of flowers. These can handle a light frost. If plants survive the winter, cut back by about a third in spring to encourage fresh new growth.
Enjoy: whether you're cutting stems for the house or simply enjoying their colour and gentle fragrance outdoors, 'Lucky Lips' gives months of interest. Their distinctive two-tone flowers stand proudly above the foliage and provide a valuable source of nectar for visiting pollinators.
