The new year is a time to turn over a new leaf and try something new. Here are six tasty varieties that are new to our seed range this year. We have grown and tested them ourselves, so you can be confident they are all good growers with plenty of flavour to match. A lovely way to freshen up your plot and discover a few new favourites.
Carrot Oxhella – flavourful & aromatic, broad shoulders and chunky roots 12-16cm long, well suited to heavy or shallower soil, perfect for growing in raised beds & containers. A tasty crop awaits you between July and October. (150 seeds)
Florence Fennel Mantovano –an heirloom variety that produces large white bulbs which are crisp and aromatic. It is very resistant to bolting, making it well suited to sowing from March to August. The bulbs can be eaten raw, sliced thin in salads or served with dips. They are also good grilled, sautéed, roasted or steamed whole or sliced. Delicious boiled and served with cheese sauce or butter. (25 seeds)
Parsnip Everton – a vigorous variety producing tasty, aromatic and uniform roots around 25 to 30cm long that hold well in the ground until harvest. Cold weather will intensify their sweetness. Try them mashed or puréed, added to curries, soups and stews or simply roasted through the winter months. (100 seeds)
Pea First Early May – lovely in every way, this taller variety reaches around 140cm and produces plump pods of sweet tasting peas. A spring or summer sowing will be ready in 11 to 14 weeks, while autumn sown plants will overwinter and crop in May or early June. (50 seeds)
Spring Onion Gerda – an almost all year round cropper with mild and delicious bright white slim shanks. Very versatile for cooking or salad use. Adding them to stir fries, savoury pancakes, rice dishes or breads are just a few ideas to get you started. (100 seeds)
Tomato Piramide – this Italian heirloom bears clusters of richly flavoured fruits with an unusual elongated shape. They have the perfect texture for slicing or roasting and, with few seeds, are a popular choice for puree and sauces too. (12 seeds)
