There is something deeply satisfying about sowing in spring with autumn in mind. While everything feels fresh and new, you are already planning hearty meals for later in the year.
This duo of dependable autumn cabbages rewards that forward thinking. Sow now, give them time, and you will be lifting firm, flavourful heads with that quiet, smug homegrown satisfaction just when you need them most.
Marwei – a true autumn star. Forms lovely firm, round white heads with a clean, fresh flavour and excellent texture. A slower grower, making it ideal for interplanting with quicker salad crops earlier in the season. It also stores exceptionally well. Keep whole and unrinsed in a bag in the crisper and it can last up to two months, or shred, blanch and freeze for later. A proper workhorse for cooler days.
Red Drumhead – superb and full of flavour. This classic red variety produces handsome, tight heads with rich colour that holds beautifully during cooking. Perfect for steaming, braising, roasting, slow cooking or adding colour to autumn and winter coleslaw. Reliable, productive and just the thing for hearty autumn meals.
