November can be a time of new beginnings. While moustaches might be on some people’s radar, there are also seeds that quite like being sown this month! If you fancy keeping your green fingers busy, these six tasty varieties are all looking for a cosy spot in your garden right now.
Cabbage Evergreen F1 – sow in a coldframe or green house for a bit of protection, then plant out under cloches just 10cm apart. You’ll get lots of tiptop flavour and heaps of leafy greens, fresh from your spring garden. (20 seeds)
Endive Panaclieri – sow at any time of the year and enjoy as a cut-&-come-again crop. Give it a little shelter from cold, wet weather with cloches or a cold frame. Perfect for braising through the winter. (40 seeds)
Pea Douce Provence – a great choice for November sowing when it should need little protection. You can also sow from December to February under cover. Ready from May, or earlier if you are harvesting for pea tips. (50 seeds)
Rocket Esmee – can be sown at any time of the year. In autumn and winter it appreciates a bit of cover, either under cloches, in a cold frame, or in the greenhouse. The lovely lobed leaves add a zing to your meals – chop into an omelette, stir into pasta sauce or scatter over a pizza. (50 seeds)
Strawberry Alexandria – an autumn sowing should see your plants giving you delicious little fruits next summer, perfect for snacking or enjoying with ice cream. (50 seeds)
Wild Garlic – best sown straight into your garden. It’s happy near a hedge or in a soggy corner and is a real feature of ancient woodlands. Grow your own and use it freely: snip into omelettes, scatter on pizza, stir through casseroles and soups, roast alongside veg or finely chop for salads. (25 seeds)
