Celebrate a happy new year by getting your green fingers sowing and growing again. Here are five wonderful varieties that are quite happy to be started at this time of year. Some are quick, some take a little longer to come to fruition, but all are packed with flavour and promise. A simple way to get your garden moving again and ease yourself into the growing year with January sowing and growing.

Beetroot Jannis – a super variety with lovely flavoured globe shaped roots. Its bolt resistant nature makes it perfect for sowing from January, as it copes well with temperature fluctuations. Roasted beetroot is just the thing for chilly seasonal meals. (50 seeds)

Cabbage Evergreen F1 – this lovely variety is slow to heart, giving you tiptop flavour and lots of leafy greens fresh from your spring & summer garden. Simply cut and cook as needed (20 seeds)

Chilli Scotch Bonnet Red – hot chillies appreciate an early start, and this habanero type chilli is very hot and very pungent!  Reaching 100,000-325,000 on the Scoville heat scale these are one of the hottest varieties available. (10 seeds)

Pea Petite Provencale – this French heirloom variety produces very sweet small petit pois peas and tasty tendrils.  Start the year by sowing under a cloche in January or February (50 seeds)

Radish Cherry Belle – the bright red crisp roots are lovely and succulent with a sweet, mild flavour. Sow early with protection. And if you are not quite ready for a salad, try cooking them in a simple butter and sugar glaze and serve alongside a roast. (100 seeds)
