Early onions are quite happy to be started in January. There is even a tradition of sowing onions on Boxing Day which, if followed, would make these late. Never fear, January gives you more than enough time for these three varieties to reach their full potential. And in the case of the Welsh onion, it will keep on giving as it can be grown as a perennial vegetables
Globo – this has a lovely mild flavour which makes it tasty when eaten raw in salads or cooked. And if you have a competitive streak, an early protected sowing with a bit of care and attention could see you raising an onion weighing close to a kilo. (60 seeds.)
Red Amposta – this delicious Spanish heirloom with the classic sweetness you expect, yet it stores surprisingly well for a red onion. Boil, fry, stew, steam, stuff, grate, caramelise or roast it, or add them to stews, soups, sauces and chutneys. It is also lovely enjoyed raw in all sorts of dishes. (60 seeds)
Welsh Onion White – these grow as a clump that slowly gets bigger, so you can lift and divide it, replanting half and using the other half as scallions, year after year. They also put a lot of energy into producing chunky flowers which are real bee magnets. You can pick the flowers too and scatter them over salads for a delicate onion flavour. (50 seeds)
