Numex Sandia offers rich flavour, versatility and a comfortable medium heat of around 5,000–7,000 SHU. It’s ideal for roasting, grilling, pickling or drying, and can also be chopped fresh into salads or salsas for a gentle kick of heat with a touch of sweetness. The fruits are fabulously long, reaching up to 15 cm, and grow on compact plants about 60–65 cm tall. For roasting, pick them while still green. As they ripen to red, their heat level increases and the flavour deepens.
SOW: from February to May, indoors in warm soil barely covering the seeds as they need light to germinate. At the 2/3 leaf stage pot up to 7cm pots and grow on. At 10cm tall pot up to 25cm pots or growbags
GROW: wait until June before moving plants outside (harden off first) to a sunny, sheltered position or grow them in the greenhouse/conservatory. Allow the surface to dry between waterings, after the first flowers appear, feed weekly. Pinching out the growing tip will encourage a bushier plant.
ENJOY: ideal for roasting, grilling, pickling or drying, and can also be chopped fresh into salads or salsas for a gentle kick of heat with a touch of sweetness. Dry and grind for medium chilli powder.
