Marwei produces firm, round white cabbages with dense, tasty hearts—a true autumn star. It’s a slower grower, but well worth the wait, with harvests starting from mid-September.
One of its best qualities? Marwei stores better than many, so you can enjoy your harvest well into the colder months.
This variety is part of our naturally nurtured range, the seed comes from an organic source
SOW: seed depth 10mm, starting in pots or modules and best sown in April to early May. You can start them a little earlier in warmer areas)
GROW: when large enough to handle, harden off and transplant to a 35-50cm spacing… these are slow growers so I prefer the wider spacing with quick salads in-between that will be out of the way by the time Marwei needs that extra space.
ENJOY: my choice is to steam cabbage but there are lots of other choices. Marwei is a good store choice… best stored whole and unrinsed until you're ready to use it, place the uncut head in a poly bag in the crisper and Marwei can last 2 months (or shred, blanche & freeze or make Sauerkraut).
cabbage storage - cabbage is best stored whole and unrinsed until you're ready to use it. Cutting into it will cause it to lose vitamin C, which will lead to faster spoilage. To store a head of cabbage, place it in a plastic bag in the crisper drawer of your fridge. Some cabages such as Marwei will last up two months when stored this way.
