Brodie F1 is a super sweet, mild sprout that’s spot-on for Christmas. This RHS AGM winner now tops flavour tests and is the go-to choice for high-end supermarkets—so it might just become your favourite too. Crops in November and December, but the tight buttons stay fresh on the plant and can keep going into February.
SOW: start them in modules or pots in March and April, seed depth 10mm. When they are about 15cm tall harden off and plant out, in April/May, early transplants may need cloches or fleece.
GROW: plant into firm soil and space at 50-60cm, closer spacing will create smaller sprouts. Use the space between them to grow fast maturing or cut and come again crops. If your garden is windy be prepared to stake your Brussels, Brodie grows about 75cm tall. In mid-summer they will enjoy a dose of general fertiliser.
EAT & ENJOY: you can pick Brodie from mid-November, perfect for your Christmas crop, but the buttons stay fresh on the plants for months and can continue into February. Steam or roast with some smoked bacon (or with your pigs-in-blankets). Delish!
