Squash Sombre F1 (Winter Sweet)

£1.25 / pack(s)

Growing short but vigorous vines this variety will not try to take over your whole garden!  Fruits can weigh in between 1 to 3 kg if kept to 3 or 4 fruits per plant.  You can leave them to grow more fruits but they will be smaller as the plant’s energy is being shared out more.  Harvest your fruits when you see the leaves dying back and you may also see the stems drying and cracking, cut them with a short bit of stem staying attatched to the fruit then let them cure in the sun for 10 days or so, keeping them dry, before storing them. (3 seeds)

As you store your crop you will see them changing colour from the light grey mottled skin to a pinker hue as its sweetness and flavours develop.  They are best eaten 2-5 months after harvesting: this might seem a long time but oh so worth the wait.

Sombre F1 was once called Winter Sweet which really does describe what happens to them: you could eat them as soon as you harvest but then you would miss out on their sweetness over the winter!
