Petite Provencal is French heirloom variety producing very sweet small petit pois peas and tasty tendrils. They take about 7 weeks from spring sowing to harvest, a little less if you pick them early as a snow pea (mangetout). You can also sow November to February to overwinter with the protection for early cropping around May time. Reaching 40-50cm high they don’t need supporting.
Price for 50 seeds
SOW & GROW: we start all of our peas in pots – about 3 seeds in each. Sowing in guttering to be slid into place has become popular & this is a good choice for speedy Provencal. They can also be sown in situ. Pot grown plants need to be hardened off before planting out.
Spring sown (March to June) Provencal takes about 7 weeks before harvesting, a little less if you pick them as a snow pea.
Sow November to February: use cloches before sowing so the soil is not heavily wet or frozen (but you should still avoid sowing in extreme cold or wet periods) and use cloches after sowing to provide protection from extreme weather and protect young growth from cold winds. Growth will be far slower during the winter; your reward is the earliest crop of petit pois.
EAT: shell for petit pois or pick earlier before the pods begin to swell and use as a snow pea (like a mangetout).
