Stunning variety, every aspect is fabulous from the hibiscus-like flowers to the deep red stems and midribs that provide such a contrast against the green of the leaves. All this is just the backdrop for the burgundy pods that are the real gems here: for the best flavour pick when 10cm long but they stay tender and delicious even at 15cm or more. Price for 12 seeds
SOW: in pots or modules in warm conditions between March & May. A propagator (mid 20s) can also be used. First soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours before sowing – trust us, it works
GROW: Plant at the 2/3 leaf stage under glass (only outdoors in the warmest summers and areas), pinch out the growing tips when 30cm tall to encourage bushy growth. They enjoy a general liquid feed. Harvest from August onwards, with a sharp knife when the pods are about 10cm long. Regular picking encourages more growth.
EAT: Good for soup, stew and curry; an integral part of Creole, Mediterranean and Indian cuisine. They will keep for up to 10 days in the fridge
