Napoli Giant is a crop to look forward to in October and November. The plants are not huge but the bulbs do grow large yet stay very tender, crisp and savoury. Try them cut into wedges, rub with olive oil and drizzle with balsamic vinegar and roast for 30 or so minutes until they begin to caramelize for a lovely mellow flavour. Price for 25 seeds.

SOW & GROW: start in June to August for cropping in October and November.   Starting seeds in modules makes it easy to plant out without disturbing roots at the 4/5 leaf stage and watch out for slugs.  Keep watered (they like moist rich soil) and mulch if possible.  It is traditional, but not essential, to earth up when the bulb starts to swell.  Cut at least 2.5cm above ground and leave roots to resprout – these small tasty shoots are delicious in salads but will need cloches as the weather cools.
