This is a prolific Italian heirloom dating back to the 1880s. The stripy fruits are a beautiful two tone green and have an outstanding flavour. Indeed this variety is renowned for the baby fruit for eating raw at 5cm long, larger fruits are prized for slicing, frying and steaming. Compact bush plants also make this a good choice for those with smaller gardens
SOW: late April to the end of May, under cover or on a window sill, 1 seed per pot.
GROW: keep moist, but not waterlogged, harden off and plant out after all danger of frost has passed. In cooler areas you can protect young plants with cloches until they have settled in. Courgettes are trouble free and prolific - keep an eye on them and keep picking!
EAT: prized for the baby fruits (pick by 5cm long) to eat in salads or simply munched on as you would carrot sticks. Larger fruits can be sliced (to show off their stripes) and fried or steamed. These are firm fruits and thus very suitable for freezing.
