This variety, Gourmet Jalapeno, produces hanging thick-walled fruits, crisp and juicy, that crop over a long period. Traditionally Jalapeno are eaten whilst green however they will ripen to red, with a little more heat, and can remain ripe on the plant for several weeks without deteriorating. These productive plants remain fairly compact: if grown in containers they can be moved outside after all risk of frost is over and then in the autumn they can be moved back into protection whilst remaining fruit ripens. This particular Jalapeno strain has a lovely flavour and a bit more pungency than the majority of strains and hybrids generally available: 2500-10,000 SHU rating so moderately hot.
Price for 10 seeds
SOW: from February to April, indoors in a warm soil in trays or modules barely covering…seeds need light to germinate.
GROW: at the 2/3 leaf stage they can be planted into a greenhouse or consider using containers that can be moved – when space in the greenhouse is tight and frost danger is over move outside until the autumn, then move back into protection whilst remaining fruit ripens. Traditionally picked and eaten green these can ripen red & stay on the plant for several weeks.
ENJOY: chargrill & serve with cold meats or curry, stuff with cream cheese and cook, use the crisp & juicy fruits for spicy salsa or simply slice onto pizza…
