The best place for starting seeds at this time of the year, even in mild areas, is on a window sill unless you have a heated greenhouse.  Take care not to chill seedlings at night (a window sill behind a closed curtain can be much colder than the room) or to have them too wet. 

  • Baby Leaves
  • Beetroot: Bolthardy, Detroit  Globe, Jannis & Lutz
  • Broad Beans
  • Cabbage: Evergreen and Verbote
  • Celery: Red Soup
  • Chillies: hot ones such as Birds Eye do best with an early protected, warm sowing
  • Cress: all varieties and types
  • Endives
  • Kale Scarlet
  • Leaf Beet Erbette
  • Leek: Below Zero, Porbella & Warwick
  • Lettuce: May Queen & Rouge de Hiver
  • Onion: Dulce De Fuentes & Roja de Zalla  are particularly good choices
  • Orach
  • Parsley : in variety
  • Peas: first early ones such as Avola or Douce Provence
  • Pepper Thor likes a warm early start…
  • Radish: Cherry Belle, Malaga Violet & Tarzan F1
  • Rockets in variety
  • Spinach Harp is a good early choice
  • Carnation, Eryngium, Hollyhock, Stocks & Sweet Peas
  • Coriander (indoors only), also Lemon Grass
