It grows to around 45cm, with tender leaves that are sweet enough to eat raw when young and rich-flavoured when cooked. A generous, easy-going crop that really earns its place in the garden.

SOW & GROW: from March to May, or in August for winter cropping in milder areas. Sow 10–20mm deep in modules. When seedlings are 10–15cm tall, harden off and transplant 1.5cm deeper than they were growing in the tray, spacing plants about 35cm apart.

Hi Crop grows well in cool conditions and reaches around 45cm tall. Pick leaves regularly from the centre—since it doesn’t form a heart, it’s perfect for cut-and-come-again use. Water well in dry spells. For winter harvests, protect late summer plants with a polytunnel, greenhouse or cold frame. In mild regions, they may even grow in the open—just avoid prolonged freezing, which this collard doesn’t tolerate well.

ENJOY: start picking from around 8 weeks after sowing. Young leaves are sweet enough to enjoy raw in salads, while older leaves are ideal cooked—steamed, sautéed, or added to soups and stews.
