The best value crop on the allotment
from Anonymous on 14/09/2015
My goodness, this certainly lives up to its name! Sown in May, it was up and had large, green leaves ready to harvest by the end of June when my other spinach plants were all bolting. I cut it and it grew back again....and again....and again. All through the season I shared these limitless leaves with four friends and even after I gave them a radical 'haircut', the spinach plants seemed to have grown back completely within about a week. The slugs and other pests ignored them, and this was a really welcome attribute after flea beetles decimated all my brassicas, leaving me otherwise very short of greens. Of all the perpetual spinach I planted (and admittedly I got very enthusiastic and planted the whole packet!), only two of them bolted - but even after that they are still producing smaller, tender leaves. If you want a 100% reliable plant which keeps cropping for months, this seems to succeed where everything else fails. I didn't even feed it, just watered in the hottest weather. Our allotment warden called it 'a real thug of a vegetable' - because it survives pretty much everything. I will be interested to see how long it keeps cropping for, it's mid September and still going strong. A real confidence booster, especially if you're quite new to growing veg.
