These plants are grown to improve the structure and nutrient content of the soil, they are usually dug into the soil before they flower or the greenery can be cut and used as a mulch or added to the compost heap. They also help to control weeds between harvest and crop planting. Comfrey is included here so that you can grow your own plant food.

Comfrey
This herb can be grown to produce your own plant food. You can add the leaves to your compost heap on a regular basis (perhaps grow your comfrey patch next to your heap for ease). The leaves can also be used to make liquid feed for your plants. Please note that we do not list this with our other herbs as it is NOT EDIBLE. Price for 15 seeds

Helps to fix nitrogen in the soil (leguminous). It can be sown from early April to late july. This green manure needs to grow for at least 2 months and can be left for up to a year. It will bulk up over time. It is happy on poor soils but dislikes acidic ones. Seed sufficient for 4 square meters.

Helps to fix nitrogen in the soil (leguminous). It can be sown from early March to late August. After 2-3 months (before flowering) it should be dug in or cut and covered to rot down. It is useful if you have light or sandy soils but is also happy in damp soil. Seed sufficient for 4 square meters.

phacelia green manure seeds
Green Manure Phacelia
This lends itself to being sown often and dug in when small. Sow between early March to the end of September. After 1-3 months dig in before flowering. It is much harder to dig in if you allow it to flower however if you can sow some to flower near your beans they will help attract pollinators. Phacelia is not fussy about soil type. Seed sufficient for 4 square meters.
