Onion Tonda di Firenze

£0.50 / pack(s)

This regional red onion variety hails from just south of Florence.  It is for harvesting in early to mid-autumn.  They form deep red, slightly flattened bulbs with a strong flavour perfectly suited for cooking in tomato based dishes.

Price for 60 seeds.

SOW: start in March or April, sparingly 1cm deep in rows about 30cm apart, but warm the soil first under cloches as cold soil upsets germination, thin when large enough to handle.  You can use trays or modules, prick out at the crook neck stage (when the thin stems are still bent).  Harden off & plant out once large enough.

GROW: space at 15-20cm apart.  water gently as the bulb swells and keep weed free.  Tonda di Firenze is ready to harvest later August and on into the autumn

EAT: the strong flavour makes these well suited to cooking – we like them in tomato based dishes where the flavours meld together.  They are medium storage and so we tend to freeze some of our crop
