Cabbage Wintergreen

Spring greens do not get better than this:  Wintergreen is hardy, full of flavour, lots of leaves and they rarely bolt after your first cut.  Sow in July and August for leaves from January to March and then you may also get some hearts through April and May.  Highly recommended. Price for 20 seeds.

SOW: start the seeds in modules or pots in July and August – place these in a ventilated cold frame or you can sow the seeds in a seed bed.  

GROW: when the seedlings are large enough to handle (after about 6 weeks) transplant to their final growing position.  Firm them in well and protect them from butterflies with netting.    To harvest cut across the stem leaving about 5cm in place.  These will resprout for another cut

EAT: don’t hide spring greens under oodles of gravy try shredding them finely (or cut crossways) and steam for just 5 minutes; in a warmed dish mix them with lemon juice & zest & a tiny bit of salt, allowing them to absorb the flavour before serving
